Northern China Braces for a Major Heat Wave and Record High Temps

The National Meteorological Center (NMC) in China has issued an orange alert, which is their second-highest warning level, for the areas most affected by the heat wave. Coastal areas in Shandong province have already felt the brunt of it, with temperatures climbing to unprecedented levels for early June. Hebei province and Xinjiang in the west aren't doing much better, with mercury levels hovering around 104 degrees Fahrenheit.

The NMC is warning that the heat wave is only going to get worse, spreading out across more of the country in the coming days. Local governments and authorities are taking steps to prepare, like raising a yellow alert in Beijing for high temperatures this summer. They're asking people to stay indoors and avoid outdoor activities during peak heat hours, which is good advice for anyone who doesn't want to melt into a puddle.

The heat wave has also added an extra challenge for students and families in the area, as it coincides with the end of the national college entrance exam, the "gaokao." In one school in Beijing, they gave out free ice cream to parents waiting outside the exam center to help them cool off. A nice gesture, but it's not going to make the heat any more bearable for those kids taking the test.
