Egypt Condemns Gaza School Attack | A Call for International Action
The statement, aired by the state-owned Middle East News Agency, denounced the strike as part of a troubling pattern of "large-scale crimes" committed against "unarmed civilians." The ministry charged that Israel demonstrated an "unprecedented disregard" for international law in the wake of global calls for a ceasefire.
The shelling of al-Tabin school was immense, with the death toll estimated not less than 100 fatalities. The Government Media Office in Gaza described the strike as a "massacre" and stated that the Israeli military was involved in "genocide and ethnic cleansing" against civilians. The statement also placed responsibility for the attack on both the Israeli government and the American administration.
The UN's special rapporteur on human rights in the occupied Palestinian territory joined in the condemnation, Francesca Albanese. She branded it extrajudicial "killings and murders" in Israel, stating that recent targeted assassinations against Hamas and Hezbollah officials could amount to an "act of aggression." Albanese has called for independent and transparent investigations, pointing out that the history of targeted assassinations by Israel against Palestinians needs to be brought into the process of making peace.
With international mediation efforts pressing on—Egypt, Qatar, and the United States leading efforts toward ceasefire talks scheduled for August 15—the international community is under ever-growing pressure to try to stop the spiraling violence.
