US Pledges $424 Million in Humanitarian Aid to Conflict-Hit DRC

The United States has announced a massive aid package of $424 million for the humanitarian crisis in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The aid envisions alleviating the dire consequences of continuous armed violence, particularly in the eastern regions of the country.

Addressing the Crisis in Eastern Congo

The eastern DRC, particularly the North Kivu Province, has not known peace from armed violence over the last thirty years. The recent surge of the M23 rebel group, sponsored by Rwanda, has worsened the situation, creating a humanitarian disaster since November 2021. M23 rebels have taken huge areas, including nearly encircling Goma, the provincial capital that has become a haven for hundreds of thousands of displaced people.

The aid package was announced during a visit to the DRC by US Ambassador Lucy Tamlyn and Jeffrey Prescott, the US Representative to the UN Food and Agriculture Agencies. According to the press release, the package provided $414 million for "humanitarian assistance" through various programs.

Impact and Allocation of Aid

USAID funds are for the most critical needs of the affected population, which include emergency food assistance, access to healthcare and nutritional supplements, shelter materials, and access to WASH services. This aid is critical in providing support to more than 7 million displaced persons in DRC, as indicated by the UN Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

Furthermore, $10 million of the aid is earmarked for "health assistance" to assist in containing the outbreak of the mpox virus in the DRC and neighboring states. At the same time, swift action has been urged with respect to the outbreak by health watchdog World Health Organization (WHO), as the US donates 50,000 mpox vaccines to the DRC. By early August, the African Union's health agency had reported 14,479 confirmed and suspected cases of mpox and 455 deaths in the country. That is a case fatality rate of roughly 3 percent.

Looking Forward

This large assistance package from the US underlines the commitment of the international community to address humanitarian needs in the DRC. With armed conflict and health crisis as dual shocks, this will be a strategic step toward relief and stability for affected communities. The global response will continue to form a vital share in assuaging the impacts of these crises and in supporting the efforts of recovery in the DRC.
