Pakistan Claims 'Credible Intelligence' of Indian Military Strike Inevitable in Kashmir Crisis
Pakistan's Intelligence Warning
Pakistan's minister of information, Attaullah Tarar, announced on Monday that the country has "credible intelligence" showing that India is gearing up to launch a military attack within 24 to 36 hours. The alert came after India blamed Pakistan for supporting militants who had killed 26 tourists in an attack in Indian-occupied Kashmir last week. Pakistan refuted such claims categorically.
India's Allegations and Pakistan's Response
India has blamed Pakistan for its alleged support for the militants behind the attack. Tarar accused India of using the incident as a "false pretext" for giving the green light to armed intervention. Tarar warned India of any "military adventurism" against it of a strong and stern response by Pakistan.
The BBC has sought comment from India's Ministry of Foreign Affairs but none has come forward so far.
Deadly Attack in Pahalgam
The attack, which occurred near the tourist town of Pahalgam, was the deadliest civilian assault in Indian-administered Kashmir in two decades. Kashmir has been a long-standing source of tension between India and Pakistan, both of whom claim the region in full but only administer parts of it. The attack has only increased the already high tensions between the two nuclear-armed nations.
India and Pakistan have been exchanging small-arms fire along the border in recent days with rumors mounting over whether India will take military action, as it has in 2016 and 2019 in response to militant attacks.
Indian Authorities' Actions
In response to the attack, Indian authorities have conducted mass searches across Indian-held Kashmir, detaining over 1,500 people for questioning. More detentions have taken place, though the figure is not specified. Authorities have also demolished the homes of at least 10 suspected militants, some of whom were reported to be linked to the attack.
The attack has triggered widespread alarm, with the region's decade-old insurgency remaining responsible for violence against both security personnel and civilians.
Uncertainty Around the Attackers
Indian officials have not formally labeled the group responsible for the attack, although some speculation has existed. There had been a hitherto unknown organization by the name of the Resistance Front, which was reported to have claimed responsibility for the attack but later recanted. The organization is suspected to be associated with Lashkar-e-Taiba, an anti-Indian militant group in Pakistan.
Indian police have identified three of the four suspected attackers. Two are believed to be Pakistani nationals, and the third is a local Indian-administered Kashmiri individual. The identity of the fourth suspect is unknown. Eyewitnesses to the attack have reported that the gunmen specifically targeted Hindu men.
India's Reaction
The assault has angered Indians across the nation. Prime Minister Narendra Modi promised to hunt down the attackers relentlessly, vowing that those who planned and carried out the attack will be "punished beyond their imagination." The tone of the words is strong and reacts to the fury and wrath over the attack, with apprehension over further confrontation between the two countries.
