Singapore Unlikely to Face U.S. Tariffs Under Trump’s Trade Policies
Singapore’s Foreign Minister, Vivian Balakrishnan, expressed confidence that the affluent island nation will not be targeted by U.S. tariffs, even as President Donald Trump has imposed trade barriers on other allied countries like Mexico and Canada.
In a parliamentary session on Tuesday, Balakrishnan spoke of Singapore's trade relations with the U.S. and said, "Tariffs and emerging tariffs are a reality. I will take some risk and say that I do not expect us to be on the hit list for direct tariffs." He explained the optimism on the basis that the U.S. enjoys a trade surplus with Singapore and therefore would not put it in the tariff measures faced by a number of countries.
