Germany Wins Big in the Mixed Relay Triathlon at Paris 2024
Wow, Germany totally crushed it and snagged the gold in the mixed relay triathlon at the Paris 2024 Games, even though the whole thing was pretty controversial and had everyone worrying about the athletes' health. The race was super intense and had everyone on the edge of their seats!
The Road to the Start
So, these triathlon events at the Games have had a rough time with people talking about how the water in the River Seine isn't all that great. They even had to push back the men's race because the water was yuck. But they went ahead with the mixed relay on Monday, despite some drama.
Switzerland and Belgium had their own health issues to deal with. A Belgian athlete, Claire Michel, got really sick after her race, and we're not exactly sure why. She had to swim in the river, so maybe that had something to do with it? And a Swiss guy, Adrien Briffod, had a bad stomach bug. So, they had to swap him out.
The River Defense
The folks putting on the Games in Paris said the river water was fine, like, really good before the races. They spent a ton of money, like $1.5 billion, to clean it up because, I mean, people haven't been swimming in the Seine for 100 years! The Aussies were even taking meds to stay safe from E. coli, which is a type of bacteria that's not your friend in the water.
The Race of the Century
So, the race itself was crazy! Laura Lindemann from Germany was a total rockstar, coming from behind and closing a 12-second gap to win the gold. It was basically a sprint to the finish with her, Taylor Knibb from the USA, and Alex Yee from Great Britain.
The end was like a movie scene with everyone just collapsing after crossing the line, they were so tired. But Germany came out on top, getting their first triathlon medal in a while, like since 2008! Team USA got silver, and Great Britain, who were the champs in Tokyo 2020, had to go with bronze this time.
A French guy, Pierre Le Corre, and a Kiwi, Hayden Wilde, had a nasty crash early on, which messed up their chances of winning. France ended up in fourth, and New Zealand took fifth.
What's Next?
This race will be talked about for a bit because of the drama and all the health worries. And now, everyone's watching to see how the rest of the Games go and if the river is really safe for swimming. The athletes are obviously the priority, so let's hope they stay healthy and keep kicking butt in their events!
