Euro 2024: Football's a Bummer – Portugal's Coach Martinez Gutted
Portugal's dream of snagging a second Euro title was shattered when they were booted out of Euro 2024 following a nail-biting penalty shootout loss to France in the quarters. After the heartbreaking game, their coach, Roberto Martinez, couldn't hold back his sadness and annoyance, saying football can be a real downer sometimes.
It all came down to the wire when Joao Felix couldn't nail his penalty kick, which basically handed France the win and sent Portugal packing. Martinez had a chat with the press after the game and talked about how bummed everyone was.
“Got to give it to the guys, they played their hearts out,” Martinez said. “But football, man, it can be such a drag. We were dying to make Portugal proud, and the team really showed their true colors out there.”
He went on to praise the team's spirit and how they had each other's backs, especially when things got tough. “The locker room's got each other's backs, big time. We're like a family. And missing a penalty, it happens to the best of 'em. It's just part of the game, you know?” he added.
Looking back at the tournament, Martinez had some wise words for his players and the fans. “Life goes on, even after the Euros. We gotta keep our chins up and look ahead,” the Spanish coach said, showing that he's already thinking about the future and what's next for the team.
Even though Portugal's run ended on a sad note, their games were full of ups and downs. Now that they're out, the team's gonna need to pick themselves up and use this experience to get better for what's coming next.
