India Deploys Bharat Forecasting System: World's Most Advanced Weather Model to Improve Forecast Accuracy

New Delhi, May 28, 2025 — India has rolled out the Bharat Forecasting System (BFS), a state-of-the-art weather forecasting model touted as the world's most precise, on a 6-kilometer resolution grid. The Ministry of Earth Sciences launched it on May 26, 2025, and it was created by the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM). BFS aims to significantly enhance the accuracy of weather forecasts across India.

What Makes BFS Revolutionary?

The Bharat Forecasting System is more advanced than previous models as it raises the spatial resolution from 12 km to 6 km so that meteorologists can detect localized weather patterns with unprecedented accuracy. This upgrade is critical in predicting monsoon activity, cyclones, heatwaves, and other extreme climatic events.

With improvement in forecasting accuracy by 30% to 64%, BFS will help authorities and citizens themselves prepare better for severe weather events, reducing loss of lives and economic damage.

Integration with National Meteorological Initiatives

BFS implementation goes hand-in-hand with India's broader Mission Mausam initiative for the country's nation-wide weather monitoring and forecasting infrastructure development. The mission supports high-end radars, satellite data fusion, and atmospheric research for the purpose of improving forecasting.

Sector-Wide Impact

  • Agriculture: The farmers will receive precise rainfall and weather forecasts, improving sowing schedules and irrigation management.
  • Disaster Management: Warning times for floods, cyclones, and heatwaves will be improved and made more precise, improving emergency response times.
  • Urban Planning: Cities can handle problems like waterlogging and stress on infrastructure during adverse weather.
  • Transportation: Aviation and logistics sectors benefit from real-time accurate weather information to fly and transport more safely and efficiently.

Accessibility and Public Reach

Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) shall disseminate BFS-generated forecasts through mobile applications like Mausam, SMS to farmers, and radio announcements on local media and social media, so that the information reaches nooks and corners of the country.
