China's Shouguang to Invest in UAE Agri Hub: A \\$33 Million Foray into Desert Agriculture

Shouguang, or China's so-called "vegetable capital," will invest \\$33 million together with UAE agri-tech firm Silal in building a one-of-a-kind smart agriculture hub in Abu Dhabi. Spanning 100,000 square meters in area, the project is expected to transform desert farming with innovative technologies such as artificial intelligence, robots, and solar-powered greenhouses.

A milestone of the Belt and Road Initiative

The project is under China's massive Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) aimed at promoting the building of infrastructure and economic cooperation across Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. The UAE's agri hub is a step in the right direction by Beijing to export its agricultural technology and expertise to foreign partners, particularly those with environmental limitations like arid environments and limited water resources.

Revolutionizing Desert Farming

With the application of robots and AI, the plant will be capable of optimizing irrigation, monitoring crop health in real-time, and reducing labor operations. The integration of solar-powered greenhouses will provide year-round sustainable production of fruits and vegetables such as tomatoes, melons, and other crops traditionally requiring a warmer climate.

Shouguang, located in China’s Shandong Province, brings a wealth of agricultural knowledge to the table. It is home to some of China’s most innovative greenhouse farming methods and supplies a large portion of the nation’s vegetables. Its partnership with Silal—an agri-food and technology company under Abu Dhabi’s ADQ holding group—signals a long-term vision to build resilient food systems in the Gulf region.

This strategic alliance comes at a time when the UAE is looking to enhance its food security in response to increasing concern about global supply chains and climate change. In importing technology and systems from Shouguang, the UAE aims to reduce its dependence on food imports and improve the efficiency of domestic production.
