Nigeria and Mexico Strengthen Trade Relations with Opening of Bilateral Chamber of Commerce


The Mexican Embassy in Nigeria has inaugurated the Nigeria-Mexico Chamber of Commerce (NMCC) and introduced its new Board of Directors as part of an attempt to boost economic cooperation between Nigeria and Mexico. The exercise was conducted on Tuesday in Abuja, a landmark in Nigeria-Mexico relations.

NMCC to Enhance Trade, Innovation, and Cooperation

During the event, Mexican Ambassador to Nigeria Alfredo Miranda, speaking, welcomed the opening of the NMCC as the beginning of a new age in the economic, cultural, and strategic relationship between the two countries. For him, the chamber will be a bridge uniting businesses, promoting innovation, and opening business opportunities.

The NMCC will be a catalytic force to promote trade and investments, provide businesses with critical resources, offer market intelligence, and create mutual appreciation," Miranda said.

He added that both nations are historic and ambitious and pointed out that there is enormous potential for collaboration in strategic areas.

Commitment to Economic Growth

Ambassador Miranda underscored the significance of continued trade constructing, highlighting the strategic significance of leveraging both nations' strengths.

"This is the moment to reimagine our narrative. Nigeria and Mexico are giants, and together, we will unlock new economic opportunities," he noted.

Foreign Affairs Ministry Supports Enhanced Relations

Speaking on behalf of Nigeria's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Yusuf Tuggar, Amb. Anderson Madubuike, Director of Economic, Trade and Investment at the ministry, received the initiative warmly. According to him, the inauguration of NMCC is coming at a time when globalization calls for more aggressive partnerships from African nations.

"There is much that Nigeria and Mexico can do together," Tuggar stated. "This Chamber is well timed. As we discuss globalization, African nations must position themselves. The NMCC is a move in that direction."

Agriculture as a Key Investment Focus

Also speaking at the event was Nigeria's Minister of Livestock and Rural Development, Mr. Idi Mukhtar, who vowed to take advantage of the event to woo foreign investment in the agricultural sector. He outlined the government's dedication to developing the red meat sector, enhancing animal health, and promoting dairy production.

Nigeria imports at least $1.5 billion worth of dairy products annually. We desire increasing local production, creating opportunities, and enhancing competitiveness in the international market," he said.

Mukhtar added that the ministry welcomes investment, and the NMCC will act as a key point of contact to bridge Nigerian agricultural players with international investors.

NMCC President Emphasizes Complementary Economies

NMCC President Arim Pete labeled the event as a new generation of trust, opportunity, and vision. She pointed to Mexico as a world economic leader and to the complementary quality of the two countries' economies.

"Mexico is not just a regional behemoth—it's the 12th largest economy in the world with a GDP of $1.8 trillion," Pete said. "Our focus is on developing trade with Nigeria. The terms of trade have changed, and it's the time to shift."

Stakeholders Welcome the Launch

The event was witnessed by a number of VIP guests, including the President of the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (NACCIMA), Dele Oye, representatives from the trade chamber, diplomats, and private sector leaders.

About the Nigeria-Mexico Chamber of Commerce

The NMCC was established back in 2014 to the aim of expanding bilateral trade and investment, enabling business activity within regulatory spaces, and promoting collaboration across areas such as technology, employment generation, and knowledge transfer.
