Boston University Employee in Hot Water Over Social Media Post Attacking Government Efficiency Department
A staffer at Boston University is embroiled in an avalanche of criticism after a controversial social media post called for members of the Department of Government Efficiency, aka DOGE, to be "wanted for treason, dead or alive." The university's assistant media technician, Jared May, posted the graphic on Bluesky, with several images of a number of young men allegedly affiliated with DOGE.
What Is DOGE?
DOGE, founded by SpaceX and Tesla CEO Elon Musk with the aim of streamlining governmental effectiveness to cut down on bureaucratic fat, has become a cornerstone of U.S. President Donald Trump's 2024 re-election campaign. But the department has been a highly divisive creation, with its mission applauded by Republican stalwarts and Democratic leaders vocal in their opposition, even as many question the legitimacy and authority of DOGE altogether.
Boston University Responds
May's post included not only a provocative graphic but also the names of those depicted. After the public backlash, Boston University acted quickly. In a statement to Boston.com, the university said, "We are aware of a post made by an employee on his personal social media account. We do not comment on personnel matters. The views expressed do not reflect the values of Questrom School of Business." Additionally, May's staff webpage was removed from the university's website.
Elon Musk and Political Figures React
Elon Musk reacted to the controversy on X, formerly known as Twitter, responding to a screenshot of May's post with the remarks, "Noted," and "He has committed a crime."
DOGE has faced continued resistance from Democratic lawmakers, including Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, who has repeatedly blasted the department's authority. Schumer wrote in a recent X post, "An unelected shadow government is conducting a hostile takeover of the federal government. DOGE is not a real government agency. It has no authority to make spending decisions, shut down programs, or ignore federal law. Congress must take action to restore the rule of law."
Elon Musk, in response to such criticisms, said, "Hysterical reactions like this are how you know that @DOGE is doing work that really matters."
Conclusion
The furor over Jared May's post has given a louder voice to the simmering debate about DOGE's place in government. As discussions heat up, the future of the department is not yet certain, with political leaders on both sides watching its every move.
