January 31, Santa Fe — With the New Mexico legislative session heating up, Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham is in Washington, D.C., to participate in key meetings with national Democratic groups.
The governor, who traveled to numerous states last fall on behalf of Vice President Kamala Harris, arrived in the nation's capital on Thursday for the Democratic National Committee's winter gathering, her spokesperson confirmed.
The DNC will vote on Saturday for a new chair after a dismal election cycle for Democrats, with the party losing the White House and both chambers of Congress.
Her office added that Lujan Grisham will also attend a DGA meeting before returning to New Mexico on Sunday.
Lujan Grisham was DGA chair in 2021 and the organization played a significant supporting role in her successful 2022 reelection campaign.
Reports say some Democratic governors have pressed Senate Democrats to adopt a more aggressive posture against President Donald Trump's Cabinet nominees, after a controversial memo from his administration freezing federal grants and loans. The memo was rescinded two days later, after causing confusion and concern, including in New Mexico.
While Lujan Grisham did not single out the Trump administration in her State of the State Address, she has previously criticized his health care policies. Looking ahead, the governor is working with state lawmakers to set in concrete further protections for New Mexicans, including possibly creating a state health care affordability fund to protect against potential federal cuts to Medicaid or other key programs.
As required by the state Constitution, Lt. Gov. Howie Morales is acting governor when Lujan Grisham is out of New Mexico.
