Brazil Stuns Spain 4-2 to Make It to the Olympic Women’s Soccer Final
Wow, talk about a surprise! Brazil totally rocked it and beat the world champion Spain 4-2 on Tuesday, August 6, in a game that went down in Marseille. This win sends Brazil to the final showdown at Parc des Princes on Saturday, August 10, where they’ll go head-to-head with the United States for that sweet, sweet gold medal in women’s soccer.
Brazil’s road to the final has been pretty wild. They did it without their superstar captain and all-time top scorer, Marta, who had to sit out because of a two-game suspension. She got a red card during a 2-0 loss to Spain in the group stage.
The game started off with some bad luck for Spain when their goalie, Cata Coll, accidentally scored an own goal while trying to clear the ball. Oops! Brazil was up 1-0 just six minutes in. Then, right before halftime, Gabi Portilho scored another one, thanks to a great pass from Yasmim.
In the second half, Brazil’s captain Adriana made it 3-0 with a sick header from a super-fast counterattack. Spain did get one back when Duda Sampaio scored an own goal near the end, but it was too little, too late. Brazil’s Kerolin came in as a sub and scoredred another in extra time to really put the nail in the coffin. Spain’s Salma Paralluelo did get a late goal, but it was just for show.
Kerolin talked to Globo and said that their coach Arthur had a killer game plan and the team was just playing their hearts out. “It was an emotional battle. We had faith in Arthur and gave it our all,” she said.
This win is a big deal because it’s been 16 years since Brazil made it to the Olympic final in this sport. Now, they’ve gotta gear up to play the United States, who are like the big bosses with four gold medals to their name. Meanwhile, Spain has to pick themselves up and get ready to face Germany for the bronze medal on Friday, August 9, in Lyon.
Spain’s midfielder Jenni Hermoso admitted that the early own goal was a tough pill to swallow. “It’s hard to come back from 4-0 down, especially when it starts with a mistake like that,” she said. “We’ve gotta stay strong and go for the bronze now.”
Everyone’s super curious to see if Brazil can keep the magic going and snag that gold medal when they play the US. It’s gonna be one heck of a game!
