NFL Super Bowl Winning Coach Monte Kiffin Passes Away at 84
OXFORD, Miss. – It's a sad day for football fans everywhere as we say goodbye to Monte Kiffin, a legendary NFL defensive coordinator and Super Bowl champ. He was 84 when he passed away peacefully on Thursday, with his loved ones by his side. The news was shared by Ole Miss Football on their social media.
A Coaching Legend
Monte had an amazing career in football that spanned over half a century, working both in the NFL and college football. He's probably best remembered for his time with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 1996 to 2008. That's where he came up with the "Tampa Two" defense, which was like a supercharged version of the Cover 2, and it totally changed the game for the team.
Under Monte's watch, the Buccaneers' defense was like a brick wall. They were number one in the league for not letting teams score and number two for taking the ball away. And remember that Super Bowl in 2002? Yeah, Monte's defensive strategies played a big part in their win over the Oakland Raiders. It was a blowout, 48-21!
A Lasting Impact
Monte really knew how to coach, and he had a knack for getting the best out of his players. His ideas about defense had a huge impact on the NFL. The Glazer Family, who own the Buccaneers, said some really nice things about him in a statement. They talked about how he was a big part of their Super Bowl win and helped a bunch of Hall of Famers like Warren Sapp, Derrick Brooks, John Lynch, and Ronde Barber shine.
A Coach's Life
Monte's journey in coaching started with the Green Bay Packers in 1983. He also worked with the Buffalo Bills, Minnesota Vikings, and New Orleans Saints before joining his son, Lane Kiffin, at the University of Tennessee and the University of Southern California. Later, he went back to the NFL with the Dallas Cowboys and the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Before all that, he was a beast of a player at the University of Nebraska, where he won two national championships in 1970 and 1971. He played both offense and defense, which is pretty cool.
More Than Just a Coach
But Monte wasn't just about football. His grandson Knox posted a sweet message saying he's now pain-free and smiling down from above. And the Glazer Family talked about how special Monte was to them and the team, and they're all feeling the loss big time.
“Monte was more than just a coach to us. He was a good person, full of life and always had a smile on his face. Our hearts go out to his wife, Robin, his sons Lane and Chris, his daughter Heidi, and the whole Kiffin family. We're gonna miss him a lot,” the Glazer Family said.
The football world won't be the same without Monte Kiffin, but his legacy will keep inspiring players and coaches for a long time to come.
