Meagan Good and Cory Hardrict Spill the Tea on Making a Movie About Splitting Up While Going Through It Themselves

Meagan Good and Cory Hardrict pulled some serious inspo from their own lives for their new flick, "Divorce in the Black," which was totally bossed by Tyler Perry. They chatted with PEOPLE at the 30th ESSENCE Festival of Culture on July 6th about how making the movie was basically like living their own lives on screen.

Meagan, who's 42, talked about how their friendship behind the scenes was like a superhero cape that got them through the tough times. "You know, there are some life things that people just can't get unless they've been there," she said. "We've been buddies for ages and we're just cheering each other on, you know? We want to do our best and act our hearts out."

Cory, who's 44, totally agreed with Meagan, saying they didn't need a lot of words to support each other. "The vibe we have is like, the less we say, the more we understand," he said. "It's just a look, a hug, that kind of thing. We're all friends and we're all just rooting for each other to kill it. We're all doing what God put us here to do, and we're just feeling super blessed."

He went on to say, "We're all about spreading peace and love, and we're all just walking in that same energy. It's all love."

Meagan's divorce from DeVon Franklin, who's a producer and writer, got finalized in June 2022 after they were hitched for 9 years. Cory and Tia Mowry, who's also an actress, finalized their split in April 2023 after 14 years together. They've got two adorable kids, Cree, who's 13, and Cairo, who's 6.

Now, Meagan's all cozy with actor Jonathan Majors, and she's feeling like she's on cloud nine. She told PEOPLE in May that she's "the happiest I've been in ages" with him, even though he had some drama with a guilty verdict in a domestic violence case that had nothing to do with her.

Their movie, "Divorce in the Black," is about this chick Ava (Meagan) who's a big shot at the bank, and her husband Dallas (Cory) bails on their marriage. Ava tries to save it, but ends up finding out Dallas was a real sneaky snake and she's meant for someone else.

The ESSENCE Festival of Culture, sponsored by Coca-Cola, was like a big music party in New Orleans from July 4th to 7th. It had mega stars like Janet Jackson, Usher, Birdman & Friends, and even a throwback to Cash Money Millionaires with Lil Wayne, Mannie Fresh, and others. Plus, The Roots, T-Pain, and Big Boi from Outkast showed up!

If you wanna catch "Divorce in the Black," it's gonna be on Amazon Prime Video starting July 11th. And for all the latest on this movie and other celeb gossip, sign up for PEOPLE's daily newsletter, it's free!
