India's Reservoirs Finally Fill Up a Little After a Long Dry Spell

Guess what? India's reservoirs are looking a bit healthier these days, thanks to some heavy downpours. The Central Water Commission (CWC) has said that the water in these big water banks has gone up for the first time since way back in September 2023. That's like finally getting a sip of water after being thirsty for ages, right?

The Lowdown on Water Levels

So, the CWC keeps an eye on 150 reservoirs all over India, and they said in their latest update on July 4 that the water in these spots went up by a tiny bit - just 2%. But hey, that's better than nothing, especially after it's been going down, down, down every week since September 29, 2023.

How Much Water is in Each Region?

  1. Northern Bunch: This is where Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, and Rajasthan hang out with their 10 reservoirs. They've got 5.39 BCM (billion cubic meters) of water now, which is 27% of what they can hold. Last year, they had 45% and usually aim for 31%.
  2. Eastern Region: These guys have 23 reservoirs in Assam, Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal, Tripura, Nagaland, and Bihar. They're sitting on 3.979 BCM (19%), which is less than last year's 20% and the 23% they'd like to have.
  3. Western Region: This is where Gujarat and Maharashtra keep their 49 reservoirs. They're holding onto 7.949 BCM (21%), not too shabby, but still lower than the 27% from last year and the 22% they're used to.
  4. Central Region: Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh share 26 reservoirs. They've got 12.26 BCM (25%), which is a bit less than the 35% from last year and the 26% they'd like to see.
  5. Southern Region: Down here, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu are dealing with 42 reservoirs. They've got 10.152 BCM (19.03%), which is way less than the 19.43% from last year and the 24% they consider normal.

What's Normal and What's Not?

  • Normal Storage: This is the average water amount these reservoirs have seen in the last 10 years.
  • Better than Normal Storage: Some places like Brahmaputra, Sabarmati, and West Flowing Rivers from Tadri to Kanyakumari are doing pretty good right now.
  • Close to Normal Storage: Indus, Subarnarekha, Mahi, and some other rivers are almost there.
  • Deficient Storage: Mahanadi, Cauvery, Brahmani, and Baitarni rivers are looking a bit sad.
  • Highly Deficient Storage: The East Flowing rivers between Pennar and Kanyakumari are really feeling the pinch, as are a few others.

Which Reservoirs are Winning and Which are Struggling?

  • Winners: 56 reservoirs have more water than the same time last year, and 61 have more than their typical average.
  • Could-Do-Better Club: 14 reservoirs are still less than 20% full compared to last year, and eight are way below their usual water line.
  • Mediocre Storage: 40 reservoirs are less than half full compared to last year, and 29 aren't doing great compared to their normal levels.

How's Each State Doing?

  • Water's Up: Assam, Jharkhand, Tripura
